The big event! The showcase of the season! And what a venue... The famous Hartley Wintney cricket green has seen many fine matches over the years, but none finer than HWCC Hurricanes versus HWCC Typhoons. The weather, on the other hand could definitely have been finer.
With almost a complete squad available, we had the full eight per side:
Hurricanes: Evie (captain), Isla G (WK), Lauren, Safia, Grace, Martha, Clara and Poppy
Typhoons: Daisy (captain), Honor (WK), Daphne, Darcey, Lara, Bella, Heidi and Olivia
Evie won the toss (actually it was Guess-Which-Hand-Holds-The-Piece-Of-Lego) and elected to field. There was a short delay while a groundhog was located in order to mark out the crease, followed by a further delay as the groundhog gave Chris Long some stick for forgetting the number of feet in a yard (Groundhog: "How do you measure windows if you don't know that?", Longy: "Well, I don't sell windows by the yard, do I?") and then we were off.
Heidi opened the batting with some strong running and a four, before being bowled by a beautiful delivery from Clara. Isla took a second wicket with a lovely catch at WK. And that was the last of the wickets, as the Typhoons put up a strong stand, with boundaries from Lara, Darcey, Olivia (two), Daisy (two) and a very strong display from Honor (two boundaries). A few of those fours were inches away from being sixes, as well. But despite an enthusiastic team effort from the Typhoons, the Hurricanes were strong in the field and their bowling attack limited the runs. At the end of twenty overs, Typhoons has scored 103 for 2.
After some welcome biscuits and squash, the Hurricanes went into bat. The bowling from the Typhoons was strong - and over the course of the innings, they took four wickets (Lara and Olivier bowling one each, Heidi with a caught and bowled, plus a run out) but the batting of Hurricanes was just too strong for them, with every single player scoring at least one boundary. It did still look tight in the last few overs, but Saf in particular put on a batting masterclass to hit 4 fours and score a total of 26 runs from 29 balls. With eight balls remaining, Hurricanes got themselves over the mark to 104 for 4.
The standard of play from every single girl was excellent - and the coaches have already seen a noticeable improvement in our cricket, even over the last week. Congratulations to all of the girls, no matter which team they played in, for a brilliant and entertaining game of cricket.
