On a warm Thursday afternoon, HWCC U13G Hurricanes made the journey to Cove CC for their first match of the season.
Captain for the day, Clara, won the toss and elected to field first, so Cove were placed into bat against Heidi, Isla C, Lauren, Skye, Lara, Grace and Safia. Our girls set about delivering a fearsome display of bowling with Clara and Heidi pinning Cove back to the point that they almost forgot how to run. Lara joined in and took a wicket with a lovely delivery, but nobody could have predicted what would happen next. Safia, bowling in her first competitive game for HWCC, took out middle stump with her first ball and sent the Cove batter trudging off, only for the replacement batter to fall in exactly the same way on the second ball. And that wasn't the end of matters, because after a couple of dot balls, Saf took her third wicket of the over to really send Cove into panic! Grace came in and bowled a maiden over, then Saf returned and took her fourth wicket of the day with the first ball of the next over... What was going on!? Absolute scenes. At this point, Cove were just trying to cling on - but to give them credit, they managed to stay in the game until the end of the 16 overs, despite Heidi taking another wicket with some great bowling. When the dust had settled, Cove had scored 59 runs for 6.
Now it was time for the Hurricanes to bat. Clara and Lara opened up with some good hits, then Grace and Clara were able to build a strong partnership before they retired after five overs, leaving Skye and Heidi to come in for the last few runs - and before we knew it, the job was done and we had scored 60 for 1 off of nine overs. The girls who hadn't even had a chance to bat looked crestfallen!
It was a strong team performance and everybody played their part in the victory, with tight fielding, strong wicket keeping and an all-round sense of teamwork. Well done everybody. And a special nod to Safia for taking four wickets in her first seven balls for the club - what a performance. Cricket is back!!!
